Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Maybe TennisTV commentator Kevin Skinner is right. Maybe Benoit Paire’s ‘tweener lob was “borderline uncalled for,” but wow, what a perfectly placed shot it was. It took one heck of a shot to get Gilles Muller out of trouble but the Luxembourgian produced a bit of highlight-reel goodness of his own on the next shot by lashing a ‘tweener that Paire couldn’t handle. Style points? Ten apiece. Actual point? Muller.

But Paire had the last laugh, taking out Muller, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4).

Fourth-seeded Paire will face seventh-seeded Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals on Friday. Paire will attempt to even his record in 2016 (19-20) and he will also bid to go 5-0 in the quarterfinals against the youngest player remaining in the draw.

The other three quarterfinals will feature top-seeded John Isner vs. fifth-seeded Steve Johnson, 13th-seeded Ivo Karlovic vs. sixth-seeded Jack Sock and eighth-seeded Sam Querrey against second-seeded Gael Monfils.

There are four Americans in the quarterfinals at the Citi Open for the first time since 2003.
