Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

It was partially rained out, but there was still plenty to take in on a busy day before bad weather closed everything but Centre Court. We go inside the numbers here:

11-11 – Caroline Wozniacki’s record after falling to Svetlana Kuznetsova in first round action on Day 2. Her lowest win total since 2008 has been 39-21. It’s been a rough year for the Woz.

51 – Number of aces hammered by Gilles Muller, who defeated Santiago Giraldo, 4-6, 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-3, 15-13 on Day 2. The match took four hours and 15 minutes. Muller gave up a break point in the first set, didn’t face a break point for the next three sets, then saved all four he faced in the decider.

118 – Fastest serve of the day on the women’s side, by both Serena Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s 138 MPH serve was tops on the men’s side. Tournament leaders are still Sam Groth (142) and Sabine Lisicki (122).

2001 – The last time an all-British match at Wimbledon took place, 2001 when Barry Cowan defeated Mark Hilton in the 1st round and Tim Henman defeated Martin Lee in the 2nd round. Andy Murray and Liam Broady ended that run with their Centre Court matchup on Day 2, won by Murray in straight sets.

2013 – The last time Juan Martin del Potro had played Wimbledon. The Argentine made his return to the grass with a straight-sets win over Stephane Robert on Day 2. It was his first match at a major since the 2014 Australian Open.

3 – Serena Williams moved a step closer to defending her Wimbledon title for a third time with a straight-set victory over Amra Sadikovich. The six-time champion improved to 80-10 at Wimbledon.

80-10 – Roger Federer and Serena Williams have the same record at Wimbledon after one round of play at SW19.

67 – The lowest-ranked player that Petra Kvitova has ever lost to at Wimbledon. The two-time champion faces No.85 Sorana Cirstea on Day 3.
