McEnroe: Big 4 Wimbledon Dominance Will Continue

The major march of icons will continue at The Championships, says John McEnroe.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, second-ranked Rafael Nadal and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer have combined to claim 10 straight major titles. The trio, along with fellow Big Four member Andy Murray, have combined to capture 16 consecutive Wimbledon titles.

McEnroe: Felix Future No. 1

McEnroe asserts there are several reasons why the Big 4 have commanded Centre Court: deeper desire, the continuous quest to improve and psychological strength.

"You're looking at to me the three greatest players that have ever lived, playing at the same time," McEnroe told the media n a conference call to promote ESPN's exclusive first-to-last-ball Wimbledon coverage featuring all 18 courts and beginning on July 1st. "They're extremely hungry, which is an amazing quality at that age, and they've psyched out opponents, I believe."

The primary reason for Big 4 dominance is simple: the best players are better than the rest.

"And they're better," McEnroe said. "You add all those things together, and sure, you could say that we're disappointed with the fact that these guys in their sort of mid to late 20s haven't been able to make a breakthrough, but these guys are all-time great players.

"And so they sense and understand that, and they've gotten in—I believe, to some extent, gotten in the heads of these guys and also done more to me to add some elements to their game, which some of the other players maybe have tried to do but haven't been as successful."

Three-time Wimbledon champion McEnroe concurs with Andy Murray who said Djokovic, Federer or Nadal will extend Big 4 reign next month at SW19.

"I think the winner will come from those three," Murray told the media in London. "If those guys are fit and healthy and get through the first few rounds, I would expect one of them to come through."

"That's what it certainly appears," McEnroe said. "It would be highly surprising if it's not one of those three guys at this stage. I think a lot of us want to be surprised and see who could step up, but the way things are panning out, it would be... the guys, Anderson, Isner, these guys, do they even have the fitness to go the distance at this point, at this stage of their careers, and they haven't been playing.

"Raonic, guys that can do damage, but could they go all the way. Tsitsipas, yeah, he seems ready to make a breakthrough. To me he'd almost be the most likely guy that would do it if it wasn't one of those guys.

"I still think this young Canadian (Felix Auger-Aliassime), both of them are going to be great, but in particular right now, Auger-Aliassime has gone by Denis (Shapovalov), and he's got everything it takes, so now it still seems like he's learning on grass how to best handle that for himself because he lost to Lopez in the semis, but there's a lot of unbelievable signs."
