It may not have been a great Roland-Garros for the French, who failed to get on singles player through to the third round for the first time in the Open Era, but Italy has been magnificent on the men’s side.
On Saturday in Paris, Lorenzo Musetti, Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini each passed through to the round of 16 marking an historic occasion for Italian men’s tennis. For the first time in Open Era history three Italian men have powered through to the second week of a major.
Musetti, who defeated compatriot Marco Cecchinato in five sets, became just the sixth player since 2000 to reach the round of 16 on his Grand Slam debut.
Additionally, Sinner and Musetti are both 19, and that means that for the first time since 2006 two teenagers have reached the second week of Roland-Garros.
It won’t be easy for the Italians moving forward. Berrettini will face Federer in the round of 16, Sinner will face King of Clay Rafael Nadal and Musetti will face Novak Djokovic.
