Second Serve

The first week of the Miami Open has provided opportunity for some relatively unknown rising youngsters, and wouldn’t you know it, the kids of taken the reins and made some noise.

For the first time in tournament history, four players aged 18 or younger have won matches at the tournament, and according to one of our favorite stat gurus on Twitter, that’s a record:

17-year-old Andrey Rublev, who cuts a super-lean figure at 6’2” and 144 lbs, became the third-youngest to win a match in Miami when he defeated Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Here’s the rundown on all four winners aged 18 and younger in Miami’s first round, with who they defeated, courtesy of @Smith_J1989:

For the record, Borna Coric and Alexander Zverev earned their way into the draw (Coric through ranking and Zverev through qualifying), while Chung and Rublev, ranked 121 and 389, were awarded wild cards.

Korean Hyeon Chung is currently on court with 8th-seeded Tomas Berdych in Miami. Here are the matchups for the other three young guns, who will all be in action on Saturday in Miami:

Rublev will face Canada’s Vasek Pospisil, Coric will face David Goffin and Zverev will face Lukas Rosol.
