Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

For the second consecutive year, rising Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic has knocked out a Top 10 player in the first round at Roland Garros. Today Mladenovic built a big lead against 6th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard and hung on for the 6-4, 6-4 victory to book a spot in the second round.

Last year Mladenovic upset Li Na en route to her career-best performance at a Grand Slam. She has now notched four career Top 10 wins in her career, and all of them have taken place in Paris.

For Bouchard, who was defending semifinal points from last year, a drop out of the Top 10 is likely, but she still has a chance to remain inside the Top 10 depending on other results.

The Canadian drops to 7-10 in the world.

Mladenovic will face either Danka Kovinic or Klara Koukalova in round two.
