Mikhail Youzhny was forced to retire due to back issues from his first-round match with Damir Dzhumhur on Day 1 of the French Open after dropping the first two sets, 6-2, 6-1. But before the Russian went down he attempted a tried-and-true motivational approach beneath the warm Parisian sun.

ESPN’s cameras captured this episode, but it wasn’t Youzhny’s only attempt to bludgeon himself on the day. He actually went for it twice.



Youzhny has struggled mightly in 2015. He didn’t even draw blood today in Paris. Clearly, he was in much better head-banging form back in the day:
