Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios could meet in the third round at next week’s Mutua Madrid Masters, the draw revealed on Friday.

Kyrgios, who flew to Australian to attend his grandfather’s funeral last week after pulling out of the Estoril Open, owns a 1-1 lifetime record against Nadal. He fell to the Spaniard at Rome last year in three sets in the third round.

Fourth-seeded Nadal will face either Fabio Fognini or Joao Sousa in the second round. Kyrgios opens with Marcos Baghdatis in the first round and could face Bernard Tomic or Ryan Harrison in the second round.

The top eight seeds receive first-round byes at Madrid.

Top-seeded Andy Murray will open with either Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or Marius Copil in the second round. The Scot, a runner-up last year at Madrid, could face [13] Lucas Pouille in the third round and [8] Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals. Thiem defeated Murray in the semifinals at Barcelona last week, while Pouille won the title at Budapest.


Defending champion Novak Djokovic will face either Tommy Robredo or Nicolas Almagro in the second round. The Serb could face [15] Gael Monfils in the third round and [6] Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals.

Enticing first-round matchups at Madrid include, [9] David Goffin vs. Karen Khachanov, [12] Grigor Dimitrov vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber and Alexander Zverev vs. Fernando Verdasco.
