Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been forced out of this year’s Mutua Madrid Open by a shoulder injury. The No.10-seed was slated to face Spain’s David Ferrer in second-round action today.

“It's something I did, I think, last week on the practice,” said the Frenchman. “I had little bit of pain from the match of Kuznetsov. I don't want to take any risk anymore because there is other tournament in few weeks. I want to play them 100%. So no risk for me.”

Tsonga at this point is unsure about whether he will play Rome next week.

“I will see on the next few days, how it goes. I'll take, of course, a decision later if I go or not.”

Ferrer, who is bidding to win his 700th ATP match this week at Madrid, will face Kei Nishikori next. Japan’s No.1 took out Diego Schwartzman, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.
