Second Serve

Pablo Cuevas pulled off the trick shot of the year in the Magic Box.

Watch Cuevas streak forward to retrieve an Alexander Zverev drop shot, reverse course and sprint to the back wall then show his improvisational skills with this mind-blowing flick.

That magical sequence on game point of the second game of the second set brought the crowd to its feet and Zverev to his knees.

The 27th-ranked Cuevas did not drop a game the rest of the set scoring a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory to advance to his first Mutua Madrid Open semifinal.

Cuevas said his no-look stunner was a spontaneous creation.

"I mean, I don't practice it very often," Cuevas said. "It was just a last-minute thing that I hit. I thought it would work. Very few times you do a great volley. Normally I never try that shot. Today I tried that shot.

"I thought I hit the ball pretty well. When I looked that I placed it in a good place in the court, I'm happy for that."

It is the first Masters semifinal of Cuevas' career. The unseeded Uruguayan will play either lucky loser Borna Coric or eighth-seeded Dominic Thiem for a spot in the final.

It was a milestone victory for the 31-year-old Cuevas, who suffered severe heartbreak in his prior two Masters quarterfinals this season.

Cuevas held two match points against Pablo Carreno Busta at Indian Wells and was two points from defeating Lucas Pouille at Monte-Carlo before losing both of those quarterfinals.

The magic touch he showed today sparked the Sao Paulo champion into his second semifinal of the season.
