Second Serve

Richard Gasquet wears a rooster on his shirt and made the ball dance like a butterfly in Madrid.

Watch Gasquet show the full shot spectrum from his brilliant one-handed backhand.

Watch: Zverev Completes Title Defense

The Frenchman angles a sharp backhand return to drag Tomas Berdych wide, drives a topspin backhand to back up the big Czech then shows subtle torment with the slick dropper during his 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The 29th-ranked Gasquet beat Berdych for the first time since the 2015 US Open, snapping a streak of three straight losses to the powerful Czech.

Gasquet will play either explosive Russian Karen Khachanov or Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic in round two.

Earlier, Denis Shapovalov swept Tennys Sandgren, 6-1, 6-4.

The 19-year-old Canadian pitched a near shutout on serve. Shapovalov won 23 of 26 first-serve points and permitted just three points on second serve in a 53-minute triumph.

Shapovalov awaits the winner of the all-French clash between Benoit Paire and 15th-seeded Lucas Pouille.
