The WTA’s No.1 ranking is on the line at Rome and Simona Halep will have to battle hard if she is to survive the week as the tour’s top dog. Halep needs to reach at least the quarterfinals and even if she does she still needs to exceed the result of World No.2 Caroline Wozniacki by at least one round to begin a 29th week at No.1 next week.

Halep, who has made the quarterfinals or better at 6 of her 7 tournaments this year, will face Naomi Osaka in second-round action on Wednesday at Rome. Wozniacki will face Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck.

If the two stars meet in the WTA final, it would be for the No.1 ranking as well as honors in Rome.
