Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. On the eve of first ball at #RG19, let’s preview the women’s singles draw, by the numbers.

1

The number of players with a shot to reach No.1 at the end of Roland Garros. But four of those players will have to do something very special to make it. The No.1 ranking stays with Naomi Osaka unless Karolina Pliskova, Kiki Bertens, Petra Kvitova or Angelique Kerber reach AT LEAST the final. Osaka secures the No.1 spot by reaching the final, or if any of the other aforementioned players fail to reach the title round. Kerber and Kvitova would have to win the title to get to No.1.

19

Number of weeks that Osaka will have spent at No.1 at the end of Roland Garros. If she holds on to the top ranking she’ll tie Kim Clijsters for 17th on the WTA’s all-time weeks at No.1 list.

22

The seed of Canada’s Bianca Andreescu at Roland Garros. The 18-year-old completed 2018 at No. 152 in the world. Remarkable. Note: Andreescu is seeded for the first time at a major. Aliasksandra Sasnovich of Belarus it the other WTA player that is seeded for the first time at a Slam (32).

5

Number of former Roland Garros champions in this year’s main draw. They are: Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, Garbiñe Muguruza, Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Among them only Williams (2002, 2013 and 2015) has won the title more than once. To read more about Serena Williams, check out Tumaini Carayol’s great piece in the Guardian.

69-1

The record of Serena Williams in first-round matches at Grand Slams. The American’s only loss in such a match came here in Paris in 2012, when she lost to France’s Virginie Razzano.

24-5

The record of Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza at Roland Garros. The 2016 champs’ career winning percentage in Paris is .828, ranking her behind only Serena Williams among active #WTA players with 20 or more matches at the French.

50

The number of consecutive Grand Slams played by Alizé Cornet of France. She leads all active women in consecutive Grand Slams played and is seventh on the WTA’s all-time list.

2007

The year a WTA player last defended her Roland Garros title. Justine Henin is one of just six players who have defended the title in Paris since 1945. Simona Halep will give it a shot this year. Three Roland Garros champions have made it to the final and lost during their title defense since 2007 (Schiavone, 2011, Sharapova, 2013, Williams 2016).

6

Number of top seeds that have fallen in the first round of a major in Open Era history. Naomi Osaka is this year’s No.1 seed.
