Wozniacki on RG Loss: Keep Grinding

Caroline Wozniacki embarked on the perfect start only to make another painful Paris exit.

In her Roland Garros main draw debut, Veronika Kudermetova dropped seven straight games then stormed back to win 12 of the final 16 games toppling Woniacki, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, for her biggest career win.

Playing with white taping wrapping her strained right calf, the 13th-seeded Dane struggled to cope with the 68th-ranked Russian's power during the final two sets.

Kudermetova fired 25 more winners—40 to 15—in a two hour, four minute win.

Wozniacki fell in the first round for the second time in her last five appearances in Paris.

It has been a season of struggle for the former world No. 1 who suffered her third straight opening-round exit since falling to Madison Keys in the Charleston final last month.

"Yes, definitely frustrating," Wozniacki told the media in Paris. "You know, you want to win, you're competitive, you work hard, and you want to see results. So, you know, it hasn't been a great year for me so far. And I'm just going to try and work hard and try to turn that around. Right now there's not much I can do about the first six months of the season."

The 2018 Australian Open champion, who retired from Madrid and Rome due to the calf injury, said she's trying to stay positive and "keep grinding."

"I had some good weeks where I felt great, and then I've had some weeks where I've been sick and some weeks where I've been injured," Wozniacki said. "So I just have to try and stay positive, and obviously it's not as easy to stay positive when things aren't going your way, but I think that's when you really need to and you need to just keep grinding."

Wozniacki joined seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber as the latest major champion to fall from the draw. Earlier today, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova withdrew due to a left forearm injury.
