The future of Roger Federer's growing facial hair rests in the hands of his twin daughters and a bearded, benevolent figure: Santa Claus.

In the aftermath of his three-set victory over Kei Nishikori, Federer was asked how long he will keep his stubble, which is growing toward a full-blown beard.

"If it itches too much, I'll take it off. If my girls can't stand it, I'll take it off," Federer replied. "If I look in the mirror and I don't like it I'll take it off. Maybe if I think of Santa I'll keep it. It's around the corner... Really, I don't know yet."

Asked wife Mirka's reaction to the unshaven look, Federer joked his facial hair is a form of independent expression within the family. See his reply to the Mirka question at the 1:45 mark of the video above.

"Yeah, she's fine with it," Federer said chuckling, as if amused by the question. "Yeah, she's okay. Yes. I do take decisions by myself sometimes. I don't know about your wife, but I'm allowed to."
