Second Serve

Caroline Wozniacki saved three match points during her three-set loss to Serena Williams in the Singapore semifinals, but this gem in the 12th game of the third set was the only one that caused her to crack a smile.

And she certainly deserved to after a courageous display that saw her knock off three volleys to put the point away.

Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Wozniacki took the initiative in the point and got to the net incrementally, using a big inside-out forehand from the baseline followed by a midcourt crosscourt forehand on Serena’s short reply. This is a major development for a woman tabbed “the golden retriever,” and it’s definitely part of the reason that Wozniacki has gone from the fringe of the top 20 to being a bona fide contender for major titles again.

In year’s past, Wozniacki would have retreated back to the baseline after her midcourt forehand, but today, under extreme pressure, she moved forward courageously and made the volleys to lock up the point.

Wozniacki finished the match winning 12 of 14 points at the net. She didn’t venture there all too often, but definitely enough, and when she did she was efficient.

Now that’s something to smile about.
