CNN released a piece entitled “Top Tennis Players Choke on ‘Hazardous’ Smog at China Open in Beijing," and the article featured some scathing commentary from Slovakia’s Martin Klizan.

After falling to Fabio Fognini, 6-2, 6-1, in his first-round match at Beijing, Klizan complained that the smog is so extreme in Beijing that he will leave the event off the calendar for the rest of his career.

It’s not the first time Klizan has played in Beijing. Last year he qualified and upset Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals before falling to Tomas Berdych in the semis.

According to CNN, China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a yellow alert due to air quality on Wednesday, and the smog has been called hazardous by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

Top players were asked about the pollution in press, and though they acknowledged the situation, they were not as vocal as Klizan. Instead, they accept it as a situation to be dealt with.

“No, nothing new for us,” third-seeded Rafael Nadal said of the pollution on Tuesday night. “I played here a lot of times. Was very humid today. I see the pollution this year better than other years. That's my feeling, seriously. Two days ago was a very beautiful day, blue sky. Is true that during the afternoon, seems like the pollution goes down a little bit more. But in the morning was not bad at all.”

“The pollution, I think we're used to it when we play here,” said Caroline Wozniacki. “The good thing is that it's a little colder here than it was in Wuhan. You know, we just play. We just play. It's the same for both players. It's a big city, so that's what you can expect.”
