Groth To Retire After Australian Open

Sam Groth will close the curtain on his 13-year career after the Australian Open.

The 30-year-old Melbourne native will retire after the Melbourne major, set for January 15-28th.

The rigors of global travel and diminishing desire caused Groth to struggle “with the whole life on the tour thing.”

“It’s been something I’ve been thinking about since Wimbledon,” Groth told The Herald Sun's Leo Schlink in announcing his retirement.

In August of 2015, the serve-and-volleyer reached a career-high rank of No. 53.

Groth, who has struggled with injuries this season, is currently ranked No. 235.

“I’m excited because it’s going to be the closing of this book and the start of the new chapter,” Groth told The Herald Sun. “Hopefully I can find something I really enjoy doing again. “I’m a passionate, competitive person so hopefully I can do something I’m passionate about.”
