Second Serve

Never a dull moment. If it isn’t written on Gael Monfils’ business card, it really should be.

And Thursday was no exception for the flamboyant Frenchman as he struck this acrobatic ‘tweener to win a rollicking point in the second set of his 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

We’ve seen a lot of great ‘tweeners in 2018, but has anyone managed to hit one with quite as much hangtime on the jump? Just insane athleticism from Monfils—at 32 years of age he is still one of the quickest, most elastic players on the ATP Tour.

Monfils will bid to reach his fourth semifinal of 2018 when he faces Vasek Pospisil in the semifinals on Friday. He’s one of three Frenchmen into the quarterfinals—Gilles Simon will face second-seeded Diego Schwartzman, while Richard Gasquet will face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

The other quarterfinal will face top-seeded Kyle Edmund and qualifier Ilya Ivashka of Belarus.
