Victoria Azarenka battled past upset-minded qualifier Aleksandra Krunic to reach the US Open quarterfinals on Monday evening in New York, but after the match she suffered a tough loss in the court of public opinion when she tried to get the Arthur Ashe night session crowd to join her in singing happy birthday to her good friend Gael Monfils.

Azarenka was nervous dealing with the unorthodox, spin-happy game of her 21-year-old opponent from Serbia, but she dealt with those nerves well enough to get the victory. But when it came to her singing (which was a nice gesture, mind you), Azarenka couldn’t overcome her nerves to find the right key.

But you know what? Give Azarenka credit for trying to have some fun and for trying to do something nice for Monfils.

Well, give her credit after you have a laugh at her expense, that is. That is what most people were doing on Twitter.
