Rankings Report: Surprise Packages Make Moves

The ATP and WTA tours continued their roads through Asia last week, and while three champions were crowned, their rankings have little to show for it. Wuhan champion Petra Kvitova remains static at No. 3, while Shenzhen champion Andy Murray also remains at No. 11; finally, Kuala Lumpur champion Kei Nishikori moves up just one spot to No. 7.

If the champions aren't making moves, than who is?

Timea Bacsinszky is the biggest mover in the WTA rankings this week, as the Swiss moves up 15 spots from No. 61 to No. 46. Bacsinszky, who made a committed return to professional tennis late last season after injuries plagued her promising career, qualified in Wuhan and stunned Maria Sharapova en route to making the quarterfinals. She sits just nine places off of her career-best ranking of No. 37, which she achieved in 2010.

Also making moves this week is France's Caroline Garcia, who also reached the quarterfinals in Wuhan. The Frenchwoman stalled slightly this season after a strong spring, but upset Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska before losing to eventual champion, Petra Kvitova. Garcia cracks the world's top 40, moving up 13 places from No. 49 to No. 36.

There's also a little movement in the WTA's top 10 this week as Eugenie Bouchard, the beaten finalist in Wuhan, rises up two places and returns to her post-Wimbledon career-high of No. 7; Angelique Kerber drops two spots from No. 8 to No. 10.

Juan Monaco is the mover of note on the ATP, as the Argentine looks to continue his road back from injury. Monaco reached the semifinals in Shenzhen before falling to Murray in three sets, and moves up 12 places to No. 85 as a result.

Not everyone on the ATP Tour made the trip to Asia, and it certainly worked out for them in this week's rankings. American Sam Querrey decided to stay home and compete in the USTA Pro Circuit event in Napa Valley, California, and it turned out to be a good decision. Querrey claimed the title there and moves up seven spots to No. 47, as the California native looks to rebuild his ranking after a difficult season. In addition, Sergiy Stakhovsky claimed the Challenger title in Orleans, France, and moves up 18 places to No. 72.
