Far from the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, a band of merry stringers have been working behind the scene to ensure that the player’s needs are met. And, this year, they created history.

The Wilson Stringers powered through 501 racquets on Day 1 of the tournament, including racquets used by Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and many others, which marks the first time that a stringing team has reached that mark at the US Open or at any other event.

The diverse team is made up of stringers from Italy, U.S.A., Japan, Australia and even Uzbekistan. A few years back, when Hurricane Sandy hit New York, the team managed 492 racquets, which was the previous record.

“It meant a lot to all of us,” wrote 2nd-year member William Von Ullrich in an email. Von Ullrich told us that reaching 500 was something that the team and its leader, Ron Rocchi, had been excited to break for some time.

Rocchi is the most experienced member of the team and is in his18th year.
