Leander Paes and Martina Hingis became the first team since 1969 to win three major mixed doubles titles in a single season with their 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over the American duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey.

Solitary breaks made the difference in the first two sets, with Paes and Hingis taking the opener before Mattek-Sands and Querrey answered back.

In the match tiebreak, Paes and Hingis rallied from 4-1 down to seal the title.

The title marks the 9th time that Paes has won a mixed doubles title (he passes Mahesh Bhupathi (8) and moves into second on the all-time mixed doubles major title list), and the 17th time that he has won a Grand Slam title (8 doubles). Hingis notched her fourth mixed doubles title to go with five major singles titles and ten major doubles titles. The Swiss miss will play for her sixth women’s doubles—and 20th major—title on Sunday when she and partner Sania Mirza meet Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova in the final.

“I mean, it's awesome,” Hingis said. “Like I said before, once we started the year and, you know, to walk away with three Grand Slam titles this season, it's amazing.

Hingis credits Paes’s enthusiasm as a motivating factor for her: “He's the only one on a day off that actually gets me actually out there,” she said. “I was like, Seriously? Do we have to play on a rainy day? I know with him I want to go because I know I'm going to have so much fun. So this is the difference then, having to go to play or wanting to go to play. And with Leander, I know every time I'm happy to go and play and practice and just get better at the shots.”

Paes, 42, says that Hingis is the straw that stirs the drink. “I know if I can keep Martina happy, if I can keep her relaxed, the tennis I don't even have to worry about,” he said. “This young girl is phenomenal on the tennis court and off of it.”

Paes now trails only Martina Navratilova for the all-time lead in mixed doubles titles (10). Hingis, 34, has now won four major titles (three mixed, one doubles) after coming out of retirement in 2013.
