Retelling My Tennis Tale

I know everyone started playing tennis at a certain age for a certain reason- whether your parents handed down a legacy or forced you into it. I am going to talk about how my tennis career began.
So to keep a long story short, I will start with telling you that I have moved basically every three years of my life and spent a lot of it in a variety of hotels, apartments, and rental homes around the world. At age 11, my family moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Jet-lagged and not knowing a soul, my brother and I were bored to death, stuck in a hotel, and awake at un-godly hours as we have done many times before. After card games and odd Malaysian tv did not satisfy, my mother started brainstorming what it was we could do.  And ahhhhh... this is where my tennis story begins...

My mom discovered a Malaysian local passion for tennis and started to realize, virtually every country, other than the North Americas, has tennis implemented in schools, the media, and is generally popular. She also found that most hotels and resorts have tennis lessons for a reasonable price and offer courts.  After being involved in many of my mother's sports adventures, my brother and I reluctantly started taking lessons at the Mi Casa hotel in KL even though we were scratching our eyeballs out trying to find out what to do. But we discovered we could play tennis whenever we wanted at all hours of the night without pissing my parents off. Needless to say, we started playing all of the time and continue to this day. In fact my whole family caught the tennis fever- my parents play doubles, singles, and mixed double with several leagues and my brother played in highschool and currently in university. I have never been particularly good at it but love swinging a nasty backhand at those who over look me and play whenever I can. We all get carried away with watching tennis on tv and I have had to get used to feuds and tears when favorite players struggle. Tennis has kept me majorly tied to all the places I have been and given me treasured memories due to the unique experience of playing tennis in a variety from Cambridge, England to all the way to Cape Town, South Africa.
Now, I am simply just keeping up with the 2010 Malaysia Open and am supporting Dementieva

Well My tennis story goes awhile back. I remember well I only remember by pictures when i was 3 yrs old and playing golf with my dads extra wooden racquet and the tennis ball while my parents played tennis. And from there on it started My 1st racquet given to me was at age 5 and as soon as I got it i ran to the court, this kid was waiting for him tennis lesson and I was shy I was standing there just admiring my brand new Blue racquet. He asked me if I wanted to play and i said YES! I started playing and it had seemed like I had been taking lessons, his coach came and asked me son how long have you been playing I told him this was my 1st time. Thats how it started My parents were very strict about school so when I was younger back home (Iran) I was only allowed to play tennis during the summer, and during school year i wasn't allowed to do anything but study and go to school. I can remember How I couldn't wait for the next summer to come around where I could go take lessons and play tennis again. It was to a point that I begged our PE teacher to allow me to use the wall at school and make it like  backboard so I could play tennis. My parents didn't know at 1st i would sneak my racquet out the house, or at times id be like Oh i have to do a presentation in class, but all I did during recess was play tennis againts the wall.
Things changed when I moved to United states I was 15 16 and when I found out there is a tennis team and you play all year round during school, it was nuts!!! I continued playing tennis, and I still am now took a break for few years which I played College Soccer during does years, but I had missed tennis, and now I am working my way back into it again.
Its a sport that you can never forget, never get seperated from, even when I wasn't playing I kept up with it watch Roger Federer break Sampras record, watch Nadal dominate the Clay season for many years in a row. Watch Agassi in his last US Open ever. IT is such a great sport and I thank my parents for introducing it to me

My tennis story is that when I was about 8 years old I used to always watch my two brothers take tennis lessons at a private Armenian Club and would always go to their games. I thought it was a cool sport and I wanted to learn but I usually took basketball lessons or swimming lessons. So finally one summer I asked my parents if i could do tennis and swimming lessons and so they signed me up with the pro at the club. I played for a few summers and from then on continues playing until we moved to the States for fun. I also joined our middle school tennis team and play bunch of tournaments. High school I only played throughout 10th grade and after that I stopped and just did it for fun. But thats pretty much my story. I still enjoy watching the sport on tv or in person at tournaments.

My story starts at the age of 8. My parents were avid tennis players and I would always go to watch them play at the courts in our neighborhood. Soon there after I asked if I could start playing and I was given a hand me down racquet to begin playing with, I played recreationally up until 14 when a lot of medical problems slowed me down. I picked it back up again my junior year of high school and began playing seriously.

Now because I’m a full-time student I don’t have a lot of time to play, but still try to play recreationally when the opportunity presents itself. To keep up with the sport I monitor the ESPN news feeds and usually DVR most tournaments….which I still need to get around to watching Roland Garros from last year…

I didn't start playing tennis until my freshman year in high school.  I didn't really know what tennis was until about the 8th grade.  My mother raised my two siblings and I by herself and worked two jobs most of my life as a kid.  She stressed reading and studying everyday and didn't have the time to take me to to any little league programs.  Needless to say, I was not a very athletic kid.

Then I found tennis.  I fell in love with it and played everyday in high school.  My friends and I would play every chance we could.  We played after school when the sun was blazing down on us, when it freezing cold, when it was pouring rain (bad idea) and even at 2am in the morning.  I watched a lot of Pete Sampras.  He was my favorite player and I tried to model everything I did after him.  I made the varsity team my freshman year and played in the #1 position for my junior and senior year.

After graduating high school, my friend and I began teaching tennis at a city summer camp because of this flyer we saw for a youth tennis program.  I got my USPTA certification that summer in 1999 and have been teaching for the last 11 years.  I've taught kids as little as age 3, I've taught their parents, and I've even learned how to teach a little wheelchair tennis.  I've won a couple of USTA tournaments, including a Men's Open Doubles tournament (hehe, but seriously I did.  I have a trophy to prove it!).

I eat, sleep, work and play tennis (and ship all kinds of tennis stuff all over the world!).  My mom to this day has never seen me hit a tennis ball.

Lauren, nice story. Sounds like you have been all over the world. Well, I'm glad tennis helped you remain sane during those late nights. It's a great game. BTW, I noticed your name is Laura Lynch. Are you the Tennis Now Gear Guide TV host? If so, you are a great actress.
