All things GOAT inside.

All things GOAT inside.
So..who really IS the greatest ATP player of all time..?
A recent poll here at Tennis Now asked who you thought the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) was in the men's professional tennis.
GOAT Blog photo 32% of you thought Roger Federer was the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time)..but is he? Sure he's won 15 career grand slam titles in the matter of six years (with his first coming in 2003 at Wimbledon)..but there are some things he hasn't done that other players have accomplished.

Roy Emerson somehow was left off this list, with a grand slam title collection spanning a whopping 28 combined singles and doubles grand slam titles, 12 alone being singles titles, a record for most grand slam titles won by an individual that stood for 33 years until it was surpassed by Pete Sampras in 2000, and he was surpassed by Roger Federer in 2009.

Rod Laver is the only person to have won a calendar year grand slam, twice! No other person has come close to this amazing feat at all in the past decade. Only Don Budge has achieved this feat, but only once.

My personal thoughts, I think Laver is the hands down GOAT. a CYGS is something not anyone can do at the snap of a finger, it requires a player to play almost the entire calendar year and trek all around the world to other various tournaments around the world on top of those grand slam tournaments.

Let me know what you think, you agree with the poll results? Disagree with me? Leave a comment.

It definitely comes down to Laver and Federer, with the deciding factor for me being that in Rod's heyday, three of the four slams were played on grass.  If that were the case today, Roger would have won at least a dozen more slams in his career and no one would even be second-guessing his supremacy.  I say if Roger can win the French at least once more, then he'll put all doubts to rest.

Where are the women in the conversation?  I'd put Martina up there as the greatest player of at least the last three decades or so, with a resume that's unmatched by even Pete or Roger.

I have to agree with Geoff, where are the women in this conversation. I think we don't give them enough credit.

As for whose the GOAT in the ATP tour, I have to go with Pete Sampras. He's the swing king and gave Agassi a run for his money.

I also think it's more fun to think of the greatest strokes of all time rather than the greatest players -- a perfect, well-struck serve, forehand, backhand, and volley are timeless assets, and we can compare between the sexes and across eras more easily.

The strokes do make the player... this is a good point.

Andre Agassi was the best. His go-for-broke style was very exciting to watch and provided for classic matches.

Agassi? A guy who opens his book, Open, by stating that he hates tennis? An egotist who wanted to be the center of attention during most of his career? Who permitted himself to be celebrated for an entire week when he retired? He was a great player, not not even close to GOAT status. Yes, he was an exciting, colorful character and livened up tennis in an era dominated by Pete Sampras, who is bland as milk. But that doesnt make him the GOAT.  I wouldn't even put him in the mix.
