Federer..slacking after losing the open?

Is R.Fed slacking?
Roger Federer, the world #1 on the ATP tour pulled out of both the Japan Open and Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, citing fatigue as the reason for withdrawing from both tournaments.

I think he's slacking because he lost to Del Potro at the US Open a few weeks back, last year after crushing Murray at the '08 US Open he played in both tournaments with no problem.

"I'm disappointed that I have to withdraw from Tokyo and Shanghai as they are two of my favorite cities," Federer said. "The fans have been great to me over the years."

Is he saving himself for the year end ATP World Tour Finals in London at the end of November?

I think he's just still disappointed he lost to Del Potro in New York. I know if I were him I'd play both tournaments to redeem that loss in New York.

On a side note, US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and #3 Andy Murray are both scheduled to play in the Japan Open, which has $1.3 million in prize money.

Thoughts? Comments? I wanna know what you guys are thinking.. I know I wouldn't drop out of the Japan Open no matter what, Tokyo is an awesome city..haven't been to Shanghai yet, but it's on my list.

I'm guessing the disappointing bookends to the Slam year played some part in his decision to withdraw, but I'm definitely willing to cut him some slack. I'm sure he also welcomes the down time to spend with his wife and girls, and he deserves at least that for being the consistent champion and ambassador for the sport that he is. And if it means he'll come back with even more fire for the last few Masters Series events and the year-end championship, I think it'll be worth it for him and the fans alike.

This has got to be the most trying time of the year for the players who have been playing all year -- it's a shame that the Asian circuit bears the brunt of it, but I think most players feel the season's too long as is, so I'm guessing we'll see consistent withdrawals throughout the early fall.

On a positive note, I think it's great that Shanghai now has its own Masters 100 tourney after hosting such a great year-ending championship the last few years. And I'm looking forward to seeing how London does this year. I don't mind a little lull in the tennis season this time of year since November always provides some ending drama on both the men's and women's sides.

You know YOU wouldn't drop out of the Japan??? HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH What the heck, TennisNow. You don't know that. You can't say that until you've essentially stayed on top of the world for five years playing in every master's since 2006 and over twenty consecutive grand slam semi finals, etc. Roger isn't a god. He's a great tennis player. He might need a break. He's played a great summer and he has a new family! Maybe he just realizes that to be in his best shape for more important tournaments he needs to spend some time with the family and let his incredible body rest. He's been putting his body to the ultimate test every day every moment for years and years and fatigue seems probable. Maybe it's mental fatigue as well. He was good enough physically to beat Del Potro and he was whooping his butt at first. I think that was a mental loss, as Roger's usually are. He has a mental block against beating Rafa and when he is winning he mentally shuts down and plays at a lower level and when he is losing he mentally pumps his game up and comes back. Roger is a very psychological player. He is his own worst enemy and best coach. If his brain needs a rest, give the man a break. I don't think you or anyone else could play to his caliber for as long as he has. Stop hatin' and stop overanalyzing.

I say all the other players are slacking since they haven't been number one for 237 consecutive weeks yet. What LOSERS!

I think Roger's recent great Davis Cup performance and his commitment to play in his home country's tourney in Basel speak to his commitment to the sport and his continued reign as its top spokesperson and ambassador. I'm burned out having simply watched the year he's had, so I hope he has his feet up (and back reclined) for the next couple weeks!
