Hi i'd like a vacation longer than a month please.

With Andy's pull out from the masters, is it true the season is too long?

2 days ago Andy Roddick announced he was going to bypass playing in the year end championships set to be held next week in London. Citing his knee injury suffered in Shanghai Masters last month had not fully healed.

“I am really disappointed,” Roddick said. “I love playing in London and I’ve heard so many good things about the venue. However, I haven’t fully recovered from my knee injury and I won’t be able to compete.”

This brings me to my million dollar question: should the ATP season be a little bit more refined and organized that players don’t have to rush to come back from injury and have a little more time to rest and recover during the offseason? (Current ATP calendar year ends after the championships in London, giving tour players a months’ time to rest after playing a grueling eleven month calendar that involves trekking to all continents and being in several different time zones)

Don’t you think these players need some time to rest? Should they not be allowed to indulge in a few slices of pizza and not have to worry about playing in a few weeks?

Let me know what you think.

I think the season should be cut down to 8-10 months at the most.

Correct if I'm wrong but, Tennis has the longest season of any other professional sport. That and the vast number of withdrawals due to injury near the end of the season should give a strong enough argument in favor of shrotening the season.

It may have the longest season, but it doesn't require the most time in competition. Take soccer or basketball; these sports have nearly yearlong seasons also. And in the case of basketball, there are 82 games in a regular season. (This does not include the pre- and postson). Injuries are a problem in all of these sports though.

With as much money as these athletes are making, who cares if their respective season is too long. that is what someone who is a professional has to do. .

basketball players aren't travelling all across the globe though. They're within the continental US..and their offseason can go anywhere from 4-6 months (if they don't make the playoffs) because the regular season ends in mid-April...the actual NBA season is 6 months (October-April)

And you have to remember players on a basketball team can be substituted.. tennis players only have themselves to rely on throughout an entire match. Whereas within the 48 minutes (If you want to get technical including time outs and whatnot..an hour and a half) basketball players can be substituted out for other players at the coach's discression.

Soccer I don't know anything about how the season works so I can't say anything.

I'm guessing the vast number of injuries has less to do with the length of the season than the fact that hard courts comprise the majority of the tournaments on the calendar, especially early and late in the year.  What's the reason for having so many hard court tournaments in between the Aussie Open and French Open?  Why not push the Aussie Open to March, then immediately begin the clay court season right after that?  Then move Indian Wells and Miami to the summer as part of the U.S. Open Series.  I'm sure that will never happen though. :)
