Aces and Faults - Gael Monfils
He's French, right?
This is the latest installation of Aces and Faults.  It's where I give you the best and worst aspects of your most favorite and hated players.
Love him or hate him, you've probably got a mouth full of something to say about him.  So spit it out, bud.

Halloween Tennis
 This is true fear.
I saw a couple of people that were dressed up as Rafael Nadal/ Roger Federer for Halloween. I get that you like tennis and are super passionate about what you’re passionate about. There is something beautiful about knowing what you like and doing it. But I’m embarrassed. I feel like tennis has become a spectator sport, inciting millions of fans to dress as their favorite players for Halloween (the devil’s night, mind you) and say things like “VAMOS RAFA!” or whatever it is Federer says.

I understand that there is a desire in your heart of hearts to emulate your heros. But sometimes you have to put down the headband and that mask and say to yourself, “I’m a tennis player too.” And if you’re not, well, sorry. When you lay your head on the bed at the end of the night, you either say to yourself that you are or you aren’t. It’s time for people to begin coming into their own and taking ownership for their abilities.

You know who you are. If you play, I want you to represent yourself next Halloween. It’s not a time for you to try (and fail) to look like someone else – it’s your time to represent yourself. And if you’re a tennis player, my friend, go as yourself! There’s no shame in turning Halloween from a holiday of evil spirits into a self-representational coming out day!

So seriously, folks, stop branding yourself as RF or that Nadal bull thing and wearing Nike – start calling yourself The Groovinator, craft your own shirt, make your own racquet stencil – you are the future of tennis.

But seriously, stop dressing up like them. It’s weird.

Pat Rafter in His Underwear
And he's doing tricks.
Some dude who used to be famous but is now an Australian underwear model made a video imitating the Roger Federer knocking a bottle of a head trick. But this guy, who goes by the name of Pat Rafter, was only in his skivvies, which makes things seriously exciting.  Err, I mean, well...nevermind.

I could talk about his funny the video is or how annoying it is that this knocking-the-bottle-off-the-head thing has become so popular, but I’d rather take a second to mention how awesome it would to be able to work in your underwear. Am I right or am I right? Usually, I’m just hanging around in my underwear, listening to rock music and eating cereal. Sometimes I’m in my underwear baking bread and listening to Johnny Cash. I do a lot of things in my underwear, but by the end of my life I guarantee that I will be getting paid to hang out in a warehouse, playing sports and getting pictures of myself taken.

Anyways, this video is about Pat Rafter, who, after playing tennis and winning things for many years, has decided to model the very underwear he wears under his pants. Think that’s cool? Well, it gets cooler. Pat Rafter is, believe it or not, Australian and therefore has an Australian accent, automatically making everything he says hilarious. He places a crushed Coca-Cola can on top of a worker’s head and says to keep it there and that everything will be okay because he has taught Roger everything he knows.
By this time I’m already in tears with laughter.

Rafter steps back and gets ready to serve the ball and says (these are in Australian accents, mind you), “Are you ready?” and the other guy says, “Yeah.” He then serves the ball and it doesn’t hit the can at all, but instead you just hear a thump of ball to flesh.  He missed! The camera spins to see the boy, who is lying on his side in pain. Then (imagining this with an Australian accent is wildly important, remember), Rafter goes, “I’m real sorry about that.” So funny.

And the whole time he’s in his underwear!

Go ahead and watch it here:

The Future of Tennis
...is super weird.
So there is this website by the name of Reddit.com. You may have heard of it, and in fact, you may be a part of it. It’s a social bookmarking website where you are able submit links and share thoughts/pictures/websites/whatever and other Reddit users. Everyone is able to vote things up and down and the more you comment/vote/submit things the more credible your opinions/links become.

I personally believe it is how the internet will become/is becoming – democratically controlled and moderated. Spammers find it very difficult to infiltrate and it is notorious for dismissing marketing campaigns, giving high priority to articles of computer-programmer interest and generally humorous/absurd things. It’s also notoriously dominated by men. But that’s an aside.

Why I’m telling you this is that I believe it’s time that tennis become more prevalent on here. Computer programmers have a time and place, but let’s get serious here tennis. Currently, one of the top pictures is this one:Upside Down Tennis

No, I can’t tell exactly what is going on either, but I certainly like it. As titled by the Redditor that submitted it, “How M. C. Escher views a tennis match” is a pretty cool thought.

Next time you’re on the internet and wondering where you should post that great new thought-provoking piece of tennis news and theory you just wrote, think about Reddit. Because these nerds shouldn’t be controlling the internet – they can set it up and manage it, sure – but in no way shape or form should they be the ones producing the content for it too, because that stuff is super boring. But instead, let’s check out some Roger Federer tweener videos and look at Rafael Nadal’s new wardrobe.

I’ll see you on that information super highway!

Billie Jean King and Elton John Play Tennis
No one knows who won.

How in the world did I totally miss Elton John playing tennis with someone named BJ King? I’m quite embarrassed that I somehow missed this breaking news. My mother used to always talk about her love for the tennis player Billie Jean King, but I had yet to see that humorous reincarnation of her name until I saw a recap of the 2010 WTT Smash Hits.

In the pictures, Sir Elton (or is it Sir John?) is wearing his famous spectacles, trying not to look goofy. And try he does, but it’s hard to do while playing the greatest and most challenging sport on Earth while millions of people watch your every move, just hoping that you will somehow fail and do something stupid so that they can tell all of their friends that they saw THE Elton John do something stupid while he played tennis.
But too late, Mister Sir, because I saw you standing right next to a woman who goes by the name of BJ King. And if there’s one thing I want to not do on television in rose colored glasses, it’s, well, it’s probably not the top of the list, but it’s up there.

And granted, I may be watching far too much Beavis and Butt Head for my own good, but I enjoy a good double entendre and fart joke and if you don’t, shame on you. Such is the spice of life. If you’re too good to make fun of your own toots and laugh about someone throwing up, then you’re no good to me.

Billie Jean is not my girl (just kidding!!) Elton for life!!

Gael Monfils Paris
The winner lost.
I really wish Gael Monfils had won. I really do. Not that I dislike the probably perfect nation of Sweden, what with their absolute happiness, socially responsible economy and society in general and everything else that’s great – I don’t. Perhaps there is an air of jealousy in my tone. Perhaps I like Sweden more than I like France. But perhaps I’m just upset that the coolest guy in tennis didn’t win a tournament in his own home country. Yes, that’s probably it.

I’m upset with the general trend in tennis that mandates promising players to choke under pressure and the trend that they are promising until they finally succumb to losing. It seems to happen all the time. The person you want to win finishes the hardest part of the journey, only to let it slip away at the last second.
In this case, Monfils defeated both Andy Murray and Roger Federer, only to lose against Robin Soderling. And that’s nothing against Robin Soderling – he’s a great player. But Roger Federer and Andy Murray have proven themselves to be better. And upon crushing those relatively more difficult opponents, he frustratingly collapsed against the likes of a lesser opponent.

And perhaps this one word sums up my entire feeling with him: frustrated. It’s not that he’s a bad player or even that great of a player. But really, I wish he’s make up his mind. Though I guess that’s the fun in living in reality and things not being defined by differential equations and absolutes.

Boy oh boy, Gael Monfils really just has the ability to give life some perspective, huh? That guy rules.

Aces and Faults - Maria Sharapova
There she is!
This lady has been winning titles (on and off court) for a while now and she's undoubtedly one of your favorite Russian players.  She's got plenty of aces, but how about those faults?  I'd say plenty of those too.  Disagree?  Well, let me know.  There's a comment section for a reason.
