The Tennis Diva > October 2010
The Fall 2010 shoes are in and they're not what anyone would expect to see.
There are few moments more joyous than 430 on a Friday. This time signifies that the week is over and your life, if you’re fortunate enough to have one, gets to be your own once more, if only for two days. While my brain began to quickly sail away to Margaritaville, I got a quick update from a friend showing me all the latest releases from Nike. Upon seeing the shoes, I instantly became as excited as I’m sure Rachel Zoe’s unborn baby will at their first Oscar De La Renta show.
Most surprising of all are the colors.  Shying away from anything neon, light blue, or simply all white, Nike has decided to embrace the current fashion times and the colors set for this fall. But is this any surprise when two of their top athletes have seemed to devote a great deal of time to fashion and the pursuit of becoming the greatest fashionista’s, in the tennis world at least.
In this line up are the 2010 shoes from tennis stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer. There are so many choices; I’m not quite sure where I should begin on picking a favorite.

Serena Williams on the beach, close to losing no.1 ranking.
Bikini clad Serena Williams hits the beaches of Miami, but when will she be hitting the court again?
It’s amazing what all a professional athlete can accomplish in a year. Between charity events, fashion shows and doing their job, playing the sport that they claim to love, it makes you wonder where they find the time. I can barely manage to squeeze breakfast in between putting on make-up and getting dressed before running out the door. If only they would share the big secret. Oh wait, I suppose the easiest way would be the get an injury of some kind and then not show up to my job. With those 9 hours back, my day would free up tremendously.
My thinly veiled references to Serena Williams aside, it seems her break from tennis has reached yet another level. After pulling out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Williams has caused quite a stir with her inability to play tennis. Citing her injuries are too great and she’s simply not ready after being out of the game since Wimbledon yet she can miraculously stroll around New York with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in a pair of Christian Louboutin heels. Most recently she’s been spotted at a Miami Dolphins game and on the beach with possible on-again beau rapper turned actor Common, the pair split up two months again after nearly two years of dating.

Williams has confirmed to tournament director Craig Tiley that she will be ready to compete again in January for the Australian Open. But by that point she may have lost her world No. 1 ranking and Australian Open top seeding to Caroline Wozniacki.
Living your life is one thing; no one is trying to hold Williams back from that. She’s still young, unmarried and has no children, why shouldn’t she have the freedom to go and do as she pleases? The issue at hand is her less than reputable excuses for not playing. People do talk, Serena, and though you may not care, most fans are beginning to wonder when you’ll actually hit the court again. Tweets of racquets and courts aren’t going to cut it for much longer.

Kournikova gets physical on NBC.
Anna Kournikova made an appearance on last night's "The Biggest Loser" showing contestants, and viewers, a new way to play the game of tennis.

I am all for healthy living. Eating right and exercising is a must to live a long and full life. But when the idea of Cardio Tennis came across my desk, even I had to say “what’s up with that?” How can the cardio levels of a sport that’s centered on quick movements be increased? I received my answer from one of the most unlikely of sources.

On Tuesday, Anna Kournikova decided to stop by America’s favorite fat camp otherwise known as “The Biggest Loser.” To help contestant achieve their weekly fitness goals, Kournikova taught a lesson in Cardio Tennis. Though it may seem a little silly, this is no Jane Fonda workout tape, Cardio Tennis is a combination of a warm-up, cardio workout, and cool-down with the goal being to maintain the same heart rate in their targeted heart rate zone. By doing this, participants can have the ultimate calorie-burning workout. Since its start in 2005, the number of Cardio Tennis sites has increased to more than 1,700 sites nationwide.

Now in its 10th season, The Biggest Loser has acted as a motivator and encouraged families to change the unhealthy habits in their lives. In the episode, contestants were divided into two teams on two separate courts and worked with Kournikova and Cardio Tennis Program Manager Michele Krause along with trainers Chris Ojakian and David Schwartz.

Dancing with the Justine Henin.
Tennis star Justine Henin took the floor on Belgian Variety show Cap 48.

Do you want to get down? Dare I say this, would you possibly want to “boogie” with Justine Henin? For a few lucky dancer and her singing counterpart, they got to take part in a little number with tennis beauty. For the Belgian variety show Cap 48, Henin donned a flattering white pant suit and black shoes; I’ll forgive this little indiscretion if only for her enthusiasm while out on the court. Singing “Now It’s Time,” a happy go lucky tune about making it your own personal mission to be a better role model, it’s a little sad to see that after 11 years of playing tennis, the graceful moves seen on the court don’t translate on the dance floor. Breaking the number one rule of the dance, Henin focused more on getting the steps right than just making it all look natural, though I don’t think many of us get to dance with a team of trained dancers even once in our lifetime. To her credit, she kept those lips moving the whole time during the performance, a slip that could’ve made way for a fine Ashley Simpson-Wentz type routine.

It’s rumored that Henin will compete against Kim Clijsters in an exhibition match in December. Time will only tell if her injured elbow is really cured.

Rafael Nadal opens up for insurance company, Mapfre.

There isn’t a lot that I wouldn’t buy from Rafael Nadal, this man could possibly ask me for my kidney and I’d still buy it back from him at top dollar. Maybe it’s the way he rolls his “r’s” or the fact that when he smiles, he looks like a really happy kid, no, that just sounds creepy. Let’s just say he’s hot and stick with that.

The movie comes courtesy of Spanish insurance sponsor Mapfre.  As for this commercial, all I can say is thank you jr.high and high school Spanish, and also, big up’s to Spanish immersion class, I thought you’d failed me, and even if I can only ask where a restroom is, after 3 minutes of learning a few of Rafa’s favorite things, I can now see that it was all money well spent. In the spot, the world No. 1 is shown in a different light, asked a series of random questions about his life outside of the game of tennis.  Who would have ever guessed a Kia Sorento was Rafa’s first car?

Rafael Nadal, the world No.1, was defeated by Jürgen Melzer in the third round of the Shanghai Masters today. The Austrian, who had never taken a set off Nadal in three matches showed great strides from the start and forced the Spaniard into a 1-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss.

Reebok Tone Workout

There’s no way you haven’t seen the latest Reebok Easytone ads. It’s the one where for thirty seconds you don’t have to pay to see all the butts you could ever hope to see. Though Reebok gives statistical proof that the Easytone or Runtone’s will sculpt your leg muscles into everything you could want them to be, I wasn’t convinced. Where in my life would these shoes actually fit? Sure, they’re perfect for the running trails or if I have a long day of shopping placed before me, but it’s a rariety that these happen on a semi-daily basis. That’s when the Easytone and Runtone workouts came into my life.

After doing a search via Youtube for the word “EasyTone” I was surprised at how many people took the time to create a tailored workout that involves all the best parts of these shoes. The two that stuck out the most to me where created by Reebok themselves and a trainer named Tabitha. The promotional effort made by Reebok themselves involving Ashlee Simpson, relevant…um, not so much. This choice aside, the work out is intended for busy moms. By using household items a complete work out can be achieved within a matter of minutes. The next one I found was crafted by Tabitha a chisled diva that starts the video asking if viewers want to “get ripped.” Through a series of high performance work outs, the participant will be able increase their heart rate and burn calories quickly all while utilizing the balance ball technology in their Easytone’s or Runtone’s to their advantage.
