Celebrating the unofficial end of summer, fans watching the center court men's singles match between Roger Federer of Switzerland and Jurgen Melzer of Austria at the 2010 U.S. Open in New York City were treated to a great round of tennis action and a great deal of celebrity sightings. For years famous fans have taken to the seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium and cheered on the best in tennis. Though no one will be able to top last weeks Kanye West sighting, fans at last nights No. 7 seed Vera Zvonareva and Andrea Petkovic match are still noteworthy.

On Saturday, Yankees super-star shortstop Derek Jeter, 36, has had his fair share of celebrity arm candy in the past, Mariah Carey, Jessica Biel, Vanessa Minnillo, Jordana Brewster just to name a few. Jeter was spotted during the No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic and James Blake match getting cozy with his girlfriend since 2008, actress Minka Kelly, 30. Also, in attendance that night were New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and LPGA Paula Creamer.

While on Sunday, actor and all around funny guy Will Ferell attended the…match with his wife. In the stands as well was actor Ethan Hawke and actress Sandra Bernhard. By Monday, Ferell still couldn’t get enough tennis and came back for both the day and night session. 2010 makes for the…year that Ferell has attended the US Open.

For Tuesday’s night session between No. 13 seed Jurgen Melzer and No. 2 seed Roger Federer, actress Cameron Diaz was seen sharing a laugh with Ashlee Simpson and her husband, Pete Wentz. Sitting away from girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, New York Yankees heartbreaking baseman Alex Rodriguez was instead spotted next to tennis legend Mary Jo Fernandez.

Deeper in the action were Gwen Stefani and hubby Gavin Rossdale. Publically known for being good friends of Federer, Stefani and Rossdale cheered the superstar on from his personal box.
Melzer appeared to be no match for Federer, losing every set. Federer took assistance from the net in the second-set tiebreaker and showed his top game in the tiebreaker. He’s considered one of the most dangerous players in tournament. Now Federer will play against no. 5 Robin Soderling, who has completed 23 successive Grand Slam semi-finals.
