What were they thinking?

Venus Williams took to the court on Wednesday in her victory over Rebecca Marino. But it seems that fans everywhere were surprised less by her struggles on the court and more by her outfit.

After watching Venus Williams struggle, at times, to the finish line in her 7-6, 6-3 victory over Rebecca Marino, what seemed the most surprising were the amount of tennis fans that were less focused on the points of the game and were distracted by Venus’s choice in tennis attire.

While rule pushing is generally left up to the younger Williams sister, Serena, as of recent, Venus has been getting more involved with the risqué nature of fashion. Wearing a her infamous, black lace overlay, with flesh toned lining, to give the illusion of being see-through, and bright red trim on the bodice, to the 2010 French Open, she topped a great deal of fashion “don’t” list, whether they related to tennis or not.
But Williams, as expected, isn’t the only player to take to the courts in an eye catching number that made fans cringe more so than squeal.
Despite her outstanding performance against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, winning 7-5, 6-4, Maria Kirilenko didn’t do the one thing necessary when trying out a new fashion trend, “ask somebody.” Falling prey to the awful bubble bottom hem, Kirilenko succeeded in looking like a small child with a full diaper.

Martina Hinigis surprised a lot of fans when taking the court in this futuristic Adidas top. It’s as if she couldn’t decide whether she would get hot or cold during the match, the solution to this dilemma wear both a long and short sleeve at the same time.

In his book "Open" Andre Agassi admitted to doing drugs and at one time hating the game of tennis. Yet, in this recount of his career, he didn’t address being the creator of “Jorts” as sportswear. This should be taken with pride, Andre, don’t try and distance yourself from this trend, hold it up with pride like a denim clad badge of honor.
Lastly, there’s my favorite fashionably challenged player, Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Her kooky duds have ranged from gladiator to the amazon. Constantly pushing limits, the one thing that has to be admired about Mattek is her lack of care as to what fans or non-fans think of her apparel. Though, I hope she doesn’t follow suit of Venus Williams or Maria Sharapova and start a line, tennis clubs don’t deserve to have mom’s attack their courts in outfits like these.
