Andy Murray; It happens in 3s
If Andy Murray is going to win a major then the Australian open appears to be his best chance of securing his first. Federer and Nadal have been eliminated and the only player standing in his path is Novac Djokovic who he has defeated in the last 3 meetings but majors are different and Djokovic has already won a major here in Australia.
Murray’s performance to win his semi final was laboured at times against Ferrer who is a hard working honest pro but lacks one or two strokes to win a major. The Spaniard had Murray on the ropes for nearly two sets and one point away to go into a 2 set lead until Murray fought back. The match reminded me of 2 players not at the top of the mountain but rather donkeys who will fetch and carry the supplies for the elite mountaineers as they ascend Everest.
Is this demeaning to the Scot? well the signs are worrying, his physical energy that was needed to turn the match around at the expense of his health could well have be exhausted. The camera closed in as his face grimaced in pain in the 4th set.
Was it is long standing knee ( bipartite patella ) with the brutalising of body he puts it through to win a match. The Scot will win many of his matches without sheer hard running and tenacity, that is the nature of Murray. The 4th set should have been finished early after he broke the Spaniard in the first game and 1 point away for a double break. Murray was broken back and the set inevitably went into a tie break that Murray won.
My concern for Murray on Sunday is his health both physical and mental. A lost on Sunday would surely be devastating and to come back with his style of play may prove insurmountable.
“It happens in threes” three time finalist or at the third attempt a major winner.
