Murray; Wear & Tear
Andy Murray was defeated in the first round of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam last week after a straight-sets loss to Marcos Baghdatis. Now he has withdrawn from the the Dubai tournament next week with a wrist injury. Is his body and mind starting to tell him that the wear and tear is beginning to be exposed. There are worrying signs for the supporters of Murray. We are told he is still young enough to win a major but age is not the problem it is the stress and strain on the body and mind of every tennis player. The daily grind of training and playing on the brutal ATP tour can shorten the career. In the Scotsman’s case he has a style of play that requires intense energy and concentration for him to win his match. His passive play and remarkable scrambling on the court can only be a short time scale until the motivation and health of the player is deserted. How many times can he expect his body to run thousands of steps to achieve a win. The culmination of this and losing his third major final without winning a set may have disillusioned his desire to reach that dream of winning a major. Age is not the factor but can the bones, ligaments and mental state be regenerated for this Scotsman to reach his full potential.
