Federer: Annacone
Federer loses against Nadal and Djorkovic poses the question about the swiss's coach Paul Annacone. When Annacone was taken on by Tim Henman he never guided the brit to a slam final or win and there seemed a hastened deterioration in his game after 2004. Henman was never to reach the heights he did when with no coach at Wimbledon 2001 he reached the semi final, a match he should have won. Federer is looking alarmingly vulnerable whether it is lack of understanding or implementing Annacone's strategy or just bad coaching.
Can a player change his style or is it a refusal to change.
Federer's mind has taken a beating after little resistance to a straight sets defeat by Nadal in Miami.. The vulnerable back hand is there for all to exploit. Federer leaves the deuce court wide open when he hits the forehand on his back hand side in the ad court. In the past speed would get him out of awkward situations but that sharpness has diminished by a fraction. Federer can win one more major before his retirement, but he needs to add to game and although he can move he is not a natural volleyer to close out the points earlier, perhaps Annacone can work on this part of his game.
