Are female players too sex-ified?
Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova never had to pose in a short dress or wear bright red lipstick to get more interviews and appreciation, they did it with hard work and wins. Nowadays it seems like every female player has to "sex it up" with photo shoots and what not to get more exposure (pun intended) for their career. Is this a chauvanistic trend or just a sign of the times?

It's a sign of the times. Tennis is an industry and sex sells. Plus, not every woman can win the big purse, so they have to make their millions in other ways - endorsements. Looking good is a big part of endorsing a brand.

RE:Are female players too sex-ified?
I wrote a blog on the sexification/ sell-out nature of many WTA players. The way you wrote "...not every woman can win the big purse, so they have to make their millions in others ways..." sounds like another form of prostitution. Do all the ATP players who don't win the big purse sell themselves as sex objects for money? No.

RE:Are female players too sex-ified?
It does give one pause that Tennis is the only major sport in which the female players automatically default to a "hot" stereotype. In general, other female athletes are not played for nearly as much feminine sex appeal.
Does this have to do with the fan base or the powers that be behind the bigger pro tennis picture?

Tennis is one of the only sports that incorporates the slightly more shallow factors like fashion so it would be no wonder that they would want hot women presenting the items.

Women's tennis has to compete for TV ratings and tickets sales with Ice skating, beach volley ball, gymnastics. These othe sports have HOTER girls wearing less clothes, Have you seen anybody who looks like Serena or Kuznetsova in these sports? they could not suvive. The bottom line is money.
In the today's issue of ESPN magazine there are 20 athletes posing nude, including Vera Zvonareva.
Ashley Harkleroad was the first tennis player to pose nude for Playboy in 2007.
Thank god tennis has Maria Sharapova, with class, beauty, star power and the top payed female athete in the world.
