In a battle of the ages, youth prevailed. Tamarine Tanasugarn defeated 40-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1 in a thrilling three hour, seven-minute Osaka final. The 33-year-old Thai claimed her fourth career title. With a combined age of 73, the two veterans — two of Asia's most recognizable female athletes — were playing the oldest known final in the history of women's tennis.

Andy Murray  resides one spot behind Roger Federer in the rankings, but continues to have the Swiss stylist's number in Masters events. Playing some of his best tennis of the season, Murray collected his sixth career Masters 1000 title with today's 6-3, 6-2 win over Federer in the the Shanghai Rolex Masters final.

Match point came again and this time, Roger Federer finished the job.  A month removed from their dramatic five-set US Open semifinal, Federer and Novak Djokovic squared off again today with Federer posting a 7-5, 6-4 victory in one hour, 42 minutes to advance to the Shanghai final and avenge his US Open loss.

The Osaka final shapes up as a battle of the ages. Kimiko Date Krumm, 40, and 33-year-old Tamarine Tanasurgan will square off in Sunday's HP Open final. With a combined age of 73 years, it is the oldest known final in Sony Ericsson WTA Tour history. Date Krumm is bidding to make history as the first 40-something to win a WTA Tour title. Currently, Billie Jean King, who won the 1983 Birmingham crown at 39 years, 7 months, is the oldest title winner in WTA Tour history.

Andy Murray stormed into the Shanghai Rolex Masters final with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep of 41st-ranked Argentine Juan Monaco today. The fourth-seeded Scot will square off against either second-ranked Novak Djokovic or third-ranked Roger Federer in Sunday's final.

IMG owner Ted Forstmann personally courted Roger Federer to join the sports management company. Now a lawsuit filed by Agate Printing alleges Federer personally provided Forstmann with inside information that prompted the IMG owner to quadruple bets on Federer's matches, according to a TMZ report. Forstmann's attorney is prepared to present evidence of an extortion attempt by Agate, while Federer flatly refuted any involvement in comments he made in Shanghai today.

There is a time and place  for everything and today's Shanghai Rolex Masters quarterfinal was clearly not the time or place for Robin Soderling to face Roger Federer. In a masterful performance in which he bamboozled the big-hitting Swede with a variety of spins and spins, Federer was exquisitely efficient in delivering a brutal beatdown, 6-1, 6-1, to set up a highly-anticipated semifinal with second-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic.

A left wrist injury sidelined Juan Monaco for nearly three months earlier this year. The 26-year-old Argentine continues to make up for lost time in Shanghai this week. Two of the world's top four — Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — already secured spots in the Shanghai semifinals today when an unlikely competitor joined the group. Monaco fought back from a one-set deficit to reach his first career Masters 1000 semifinal with a 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jurgen Melzer.

It is the final weeks of the WTA Tour season, a time when younger players ranging from Serena Williams to Svetlana Kuznetsova to Venus Williams to Agnieszka Radwanska have already pulled the plug on their season, yet 40-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm refuses to act her age. The Japanese veteran celebrated her 40th birthday last month and pulled off another significant upset today in toppling top-seeded Samantha Stosur, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(4) to advance to the Osaka semifinals.

A little more than six years ago, the WTA Tour top 10 rankings resembled a Russian Fed Cup roster as the Russian women were busy reducing the rest of the world's players to spectator status. Two days after 19-year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Elena Dementieva to win the 2004 US Open title no less than five Russian women — Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Anastasia Myskina, Maria Sharapova and Vera Zvonareva — resided in the WTA Tour Top 10.

Jurgen Melzer had just seen Rafael Nadal erase three match points as he stepped up to serve for one of the biggest victories of his career. Nadal had visions of yet another comback, but Melzer was in no mood to cooperate. The 13th-seeded Melzer served out the match at love to wrap up a monumental 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over the World No. 1 to storm into the Shanghai Rolex Masters quarterfinals.

Andy Murray captivated a nation in reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in July. The fourth-ranked Scot will he headed back to London next month. Rafael Nadal is the world's top-ranked player, but former World No. 4 Jonas Bjorkman believes Roger Federer is in a class by himself when it comes to assessing the world's best player. Federer once gave Bjorkman one of the worst beatings of his career, a 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 thrashing in the 2006 Wimbledon semifinals and Swede rates Federer above Nadal.

It was billed as Roger Federer's comeback, but the Swiss stylist turned today's Shanghai Rolex Masters match with John Isner into a shot-making circus. The third-ranked Swiss hit a between-the-legs shot, ripped running forehands and did not face a break point in a 6-3, 6-4 conquest of John Isner today.

A groin injury forced Andy Roddick to retire from Shanghai today and could threaten his quest to finish in the top 10 for the ninth consecutive season. Roddick was in cruise control of today's Shanghai Rolex Masters match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez when he suffered a right groin strain that forced him to retire while holding a 6-3, 2-3 lead.

Rafael Nadal has spent much of his career achieving the improbable, but said today he views a Grand Slam sweep as a mission "impossible." The World No. 1 currently holds the Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open championships and could complete a Rafa Slam by reclaiming the Australian Open title in January. But Nadal said winning the Grand Slam is beyond his reach.

The big-serving Isner erased seven match points to edge Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot 4-6, 7-6(9), 7-6(7) in two hours and 50 minutes. Isner's win sets up a meeting with Roger Federer, who will play his first match since falling to Novak Djokovic in the US Open semifinals.
