(October 11,2011) Tuesday was a day in favor of the seeds at the HP Open. Samantha Stosur headed up the wins with more than a two-hour battle against qualifier Noppawan Lertcheewarkarn that ended with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 score line.
The Thai World No. 168 played an impressive match against the US Open Champion, as she won the same amount of points at 110. She had 12 break point opportunities but only converted three while saving seven of eleven attempts on her serve, and she won more service points than the Australian.
Stosur won the match with five aces and more total serves and successful breaks. She was the 2009 Osaka Champion as her first WTA singles title.
The seeds took out the Japanese players. Third seed Angelique Kerber took a quick win over wildcard Kurumi Nara, 6-2, 6-1; fourth seed Petra Cetkovska ousted 41-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2, 7-6(2); fifth seed Jarmila Gajdosova advanced to the second round over wildcard Aiko Nakamura, 6-0, 6-1.
The top Japanese player left standing in front the home crowd was Japan’s WTA player, Ayumi Morita, who took a 100-minute victory over Zhang Shuai 7-6(3), 6-2. The sixth seed was benefitted by a consistant first serve and fives breaks of her opponents serve.
Other winners included Olga Govortsova, who defeated Yung-Jan Chan 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, Zheng Jie, who beat Zuzana Kucova 6-1, 6-1, qualifier Erika Sema, who blew past Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-3, and Yaroslava Shvedova, who outplayed Shuko Aoyama 6-2, 6-0.
This week's champion could win a purse of $37,000.
