Even Rafael Nadal couldn't understand the reason for the lack of great matches at last week's ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The Spanish star, who withdrew from the season-ending event due to various injuries, spoke to reporters at a sponsor's event on Tuesday in London.

“I saw a little bit, but not a lot, the matches were too quick to see," Nadal told The Guardian. “It was a really strange World Tour Finals, the strangest ones I have ever seen…normally when you play between the best eight players in the world the matches should be close and be emotional."

On the cancelled final that was to have pitted eventual event winner Novak Djokovic against Roger Federer who withdrew with a back injury, Nadal added, "The only thing which is negative is for a tournament in London to have no final is bad news for everybody, for the tournament, for the fans, for all the world of tennis, and especially for Roger. I wish him a quick recovery.”

Nadal himself dealt with a variety of injuries and health ailments throughout the 2014 season. Despite winning a record ninth French Open title, Nadal admitted the season as a whole was a tough one for him.

"It was not an easy year, especially in the second half it was hard, but that's part of my life, that's part of my career, and I accept that," Nadal told Reuters.com. "What happened with my wrist and then appendix…it was problem and then problems again."

Nadal later added that although he is not yet back on the practice courts, he is feeling much better after recent surgery to remove his appendix.

"I am doing all the right things but I have worked my body pretty hard for a lot of years so these kind of things can happen. But I am confident I will have the chance to be back and be competitive with all the things I want to compete in."

Nadal also praised Djokovic for not only winning the year-end title for a third year in a row but also for finishing as year-No. 1 for the third time in four years.

"He deserves to be where he is because he hasn't had an injury for a long time and that's very important for a tennis player. He is an amazing player so he deserves it."

Nadal is scheduled to make his return to tennis at the Abu Dhabi event in early January.
