Grigor Dimitrov began his bid at the Shanghai Rolex Masters with a 6-3, 6-3 takedown of Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin on Monday to move into the second round. The Bulgarian, currently in 11th place in the ATP’s race to London, will need to make a big push in order to qualify for the year-end championships.

Berdych and Lendl to Form a Partnership?

The 10th seed saved all four break points he faced and won 25 of 29 first serve points in his first career meeting with Istomin, and will next face either Julien Benneteau or Chinese wild card Ze Zhang.

Dimitrov, desperately in need of ranking points to close the 335 point gap that separates him from the current No. 8 in the race, Milos Raonic, has an incredibly tough draw in Shanghai. He is slated to face Kei Nishikori in the third round, Roger Federer in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Richard Gasquet won an all-French battle with Jeremy Chardy, 7-6(7), 6-2, to set up a second-round encounter with Tomas Berdych.
