Novak Djokovic, Paris 2014

Novak Djokovic kicked off the fatherhood phase of his tennis career with a straight-sets victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in Paris.

Novak Djokovic was back to business in Paris on Tuesday, but the heavy experience of witnessing the birth of his first child, Stefan, a week ago, was still on his mind. No matter, Djokovic used the good vibes to power himself to a crisp, exacting victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters.

The defending Paris Masters champion didn’t need a lot of time to get back into the swing of things. He broke serve in Kohlschreiber’s first service game and had double-break point in his next two return games.

The Serb, who is closing in on his third year-end No. 1 ranking in the last four years, would convert his second break of the set in the sixth game for a 5-1 lead in the opener, and though Kohlschreiber would mount a rally to get to 5-3, Djokovic would convert on his first set point when the German sent a return well wide.

"I'm trying to take as much positive energy as I can from what's happened in the past few weeks,” Djokovic said after the match, according to ATPworldtour.com. “I'm very proud to be a father and I'm very proud of my wife for handling the birth in a great way. She's back home recovering now, with our little boy. This was my first match as a father and it can only inspire me to play my best tennis."

Djokovic broke in the first game of the second set with a dazzling array of droppers that kept Kohlschreiber off balance, and the Serb didn’t face a break point the rest of the way, closing his sixth win in seven career tilts against Kohlschreiber in a tidy one hour and 25 minutes.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion notched his 53rd victory of the season and will next face the winner of tomorrow’s battle between Gael Monfils and John Isner.
