Roger Federer kept alive his bid for a sixth Swiss Indoors Basel title by defusing Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2 on Friday.

Stunner: Nadal Bounced by 17-Year-Old Coric in Basel

Federer improved his record to 2-0 against the rising Bulgarian with a crisp offensive effort that saw him charge the net 31 times and crack 29 winners against 21 unforced errors on the evening.

It is the second consecutive year that Federer has faced and defeated Dimitrov in the quarterfinals at Basel.

A spirited tussle was the first set, and the tennis reached sublime status on several occasions with the roar of the Basel faithful only adding to the magic.

Federer found himself in dire straits in the 12th game of the set, with Dimitrov in free-flowing form and hunting for the set, but the Swiss maestro found a way to wiggle his way free from four set points to force a first-set tiebreaker, and then proceeded to race out to a 4-0 lead before capturing his ninth consecutive tiebreaker to take the set, clinching it with a service winner.

Federer, who has reached the Basel final ten times, would break Dimitrov again in the second game of the second set, when he forced the Bulgarian into one of his 28 unforced errors on his third break point of the game.

It was all Federer would need to claim his tour-leading 64th victory of 2014. He did not face a break point in the second set, and as Dimitrov grew increasingly frustrated with his situation, the task of holding serve against the dangerous Bulgarian became easier and easier.

Federer will move on to face Ivo Karlovic in Saturday’s semifinal at Basel. Federer holds a 11-1 career edge over the enormous Croat, and he has taken the last five.
