Romania's Simona Halep won the battle but couldn't bounce back in time to continue at this week's China Open in Beijing.

The No. 2 seed Halep faced off against the always tough Andrea Petkovic of Germany in a third round encounter. At stake - a spot in the quarterfinals of the premier mandatory WTA event.

After splitting the first two sets, Halep looked in total control in the third. The Romanian held a 4-1 lead, but soon found it slipping away. Despite serving for the match later at 5-3, Halep missed her chance to close it out. But Halep ran away with the resulting tiebreak to seal the tough 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(1) win.

That win proved too much for Halep who then withdrew from the event with a right hip injury. As a result, Ana Ivanovic advances into the semifinals.

Another anticipated third round match never even started also due to health reasons.

No. 3 seed Petra Kvitova advanced by walkover against Venus Williams who withdrew from their match due to a viral illness.

Veterans Enjoy Quarterfinal Runs in Beijing

Several WTA veterans are enjoying late season flourishes as they all advanced into the Beijing quarterfinals.

Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova fought back from behind a set to No. 7 seed Angelique Kerber. The Russian eventually knocked out the German 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

That loss by the German effectively ended her chances to qualify for the upcoming year-end championships in Singapore.

Sam Stosur, who upset Caroline Wozniacki earlier, easily got past Alize Cornet 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Roberta Vinci, who earlier beat Agnieszka Radwanksa, reached the final eight by taking out No. 12 seed Ekaterina Makarova 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.
