Andy Murray strengthened his bid to reach this year’s ATP World Tour finals by notching a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Murray, a second-seeded wild card at the event, can increase his 2014 points total further when he meets Serbia’s Vicktor Troicki in Saturday’s semifinal. Troicki continued his comeback after spending time away from tennis due to a drug suspension by defeating Thomaz Bellucci in three sets to reach his first semifinal of 2014 (also his first ATP semifinal since 2011 in Moscow).

Top-seeded David Ferrer also advanced, 7-6(5), 6-4, over Ivo Karlovic, but to gain any points in the London race the Spaniard needs to reach the final in Vienna.

Murray, who trailed Ferrer by 60 points heading into Vienna, has already added 70 points to his total. Both Ferrer and Murray would leapfrog current 8th-place holder Milos Raonic if they were to advance to the final.

Raonic dropped his opening match in Moscow, falling to Richard Berankis.

Ferrer will face German Philipp Kohlschreiber in Saturday’s semis in Vienna. Kohlschreiber took down Benjamin Becker, 6-4 ,7-6(3).
