Serena Williams has spent a career proving that she deserves consideration among the game’s all-time greats, and on Sunday in New York, she took another step closer to tennis immortality.

The 32-year-old took down Caroline Wozniacki in a relatively one-sided final, 6-3, 6-3, for her 6th US Open and 18th Grand Slam title. With the victory, Williams ties Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the all-time Grand Slam title list and she also becomes the first woman to have won three consecutive US Open titles since Chris Evert won four in a row from 1975 to 1978.

Williams, who struck 29 winners against only four for Wozniacki, lay on the court when she clinched the title, letting the moment sink in before embracing Wozniacki near the net.

“You’re an unbelievable champion,” said Wozniacki, during the post-match awards ceremony.

“I’m really emotional,” said Williams, on the verge of tears, addressing the crowd in New York. “I couldn’t have asked to do it in a better place.”

Williams had struggled at the Grand Slams in 2014, failing to reach the quarterfinals of the first three, but broke through in New York, winning all 14 sets she played, and never dropping more than three games in a set.
