Top-seeded Garbine Muguruza was knocked off by France’s Kristina Mladenovic in two tight sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(6), in the first meeting of the two 21-year-olds.

Muguruza, who took a wild card into the event after falling in her second match at Stuttgart to Simona Halep, gave up an early break lead against the Frenchwoman and dropped the opener in a breaker.
Mladenovic, currently 59 in the world, was broken while serving for the match in the second set but rallied to close in the tiebreaker. She moves into her second quarterfinal of 2015 and will face Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena.
Arruabarrena upset 8th-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, 7-5, 6-2.
Other winners on Wednesday were Elina Svitolina, who pushed past American Christina McHale, 7-5, 6-3, and Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who defeated Maria Irigoyen, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Second-seeded Timea Bacsinszky continued her fantastic season, reaching the quarterfinals with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Tatjana Maria. The Swiss improved to 25-3 on the season with the win and will face Schmiedlova in the quarterfinals.
