Schmiedlova, 20, captured her first WTA title by taking down Italy’s Camila Giorgi, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday. In a topsy-turvy match, Schmiedlova took advantage of some errant play by Giorgi to battle back from a break deficit to close out the final in straight sets.
The Slovakian broke Giorgi’s serve six times on 12 opportunities, and won 15 of 21 points against the Italian’s second serve.
Giorgi, who improved to 6-4 vs. the Top 10 with her upset of Agnieszka Radwanska in Saturday’s semifinals, has reached the final in the last two years at Katowice, but is still without a WTA title.
