The unseeded 29-year-old pumped in 14 aces and saved 8 of 10 break points to take the entertaining affair over the 6th-seeded Russian.
“It was a tough match,” said Baghdatis,” according to ATPworldtour.com. “I have a problem starting matches here. I am like a diesel. I think it is because I am a bit tired, but I am winning matches so I am really happy. I find ways to win, so this is a very positive sign.
“Misha is a tough opponent; he can play unbelievable tennis. He had some moments today when he was playing really well, but then he also had moments when he made many unforced errors. I tried to stay in the points, put as many balls back, and make him play. I was very fortunate to win today.”
Third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez ended a four-match losing streak to Serbia’s Viktor Troicki, 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-5, while fifth-seeded Andreas Seppi and eighth-seeded Marcel Granollers also reached the last four.
