Lesia Tsurenko saved three set points in the first set and went on to a straight-sets victory in the Istanbul Cup final, defeating Urszula Radwanska, 7-5, 6-1 to claim her maiden title.

It was the Ukranian’s first career final, and the third for Radwanska.

Radwanska battled back from a break down in the opener to level at three-all and earned three set points with Tsurenko serving at 4-5 down. The Pole, playing in her first WTA final since 2012, got into all three points, but ended up making the crucial error on each.

After levelling at 5-all, Tsurenko went on to win six more games in succession to open up a 4-0 lead in set two. For Radwanska, a few opportunities missed created a difficult deficit to manage. She had a two break points at 1-0 in the second set, and failed to convert. In the next game she had two game points for a crucial hold but was broken for 3-0.

The two exchanged in solid baseline rallies all afternoon, with the 26-year-old Tsurenko using her crosscourt forehand on many occasions to create winners.

After a Radwanska hold in the 5th game of the second set, Tsurenko held easily then broke to love to claim the title.

Elina Svitolina and Daria Gavrilova took the doubles title in a match tiebreak over Jelena Jankovic and Turkey’s own Cagla Buyukakcay. It was Svitolina’s second consecutive Istanbul Cup doubles title.
