"Unfortunately in today's practice when I was hitting my elbow just started hurting," Williams told fans in Bastad. "The doctor and physios look at it and thought it was a problem. I don't want to make it worse. I have to listen to the experts advice."

Williams' withdrawal comes a day after she won her 40th match of the year blasting past qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure, 6-2, 6-1, in her 53-minute opener.

The top seed said she does not believe the injury is serious and cites the cumulative wear and tear of her Roland Garros and Wimbledon workload as contributing causes.

"I'm positive about continuing my journey and being the best I can be," Williams told the crowd in Bastad.
