With Guga in the stands snapping pics, the Brazilian-Croatian tandem of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo made him proud with a hard-fought 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5 victory over 16-time major champions Mike and Bob Bryan on Saturday at Roland Garros.
Dodig and Melo overcame a set and break deficit, claiming the critical break of the decider in the 11th game before clinching the title in the next game.
The Victory was Melo and Dodig’s third team title. They avenged a loss to the Bryans in the 2013 Wimbledon final.
Melo’s title means that Brazil has its first major winner since Guga’s last Roland Garros title in 2001.
